MovieMaker is a video editing program, developed by MiniTool, which allows us to edit videos very easily and in minutes without having the complications that we can find in other more professional software.
MovieMaker main features
While other video editing programs are committed to offering users a large number of functions and tools (which are only used in very specific professional cases), MiniTool MovieMaker bet mainly on the simplicity.
This program allows edit videos very quickly even without previous knowledge of editing. Proof of this is that, as soon as we open it, we can find a list of predefined templates that will allow us to start a specific project with a single click.
In addition to the basic tasks of cut and paste video fragments, this program allows us to perform montages with videos of all kinds, in addition to using photos and songs that we have on our computer to give free rein to our imagination.
The Interface MovieMaker main has a very easy to use timeline that will allow us to mount our video without difficulties. Of course, we will only have one channel for image, another for text and another for audio, it is not multichannel.
The cuts and jumps in the videos do not like anyone. And because of that, this video editor comes standard with a lot of effects and transitions so that the final result of our project has a great professionalism. It also includes a large number of animated titles and credits by default, as well as the ability to add animated subtitles to videos.
Although not common in non-professional video editors, MiniTool has decided to include in its editing software a number of filters and professional effects that allow us to correct the color and improve the aesthetics of our creation.
Finally, indicate that this program offers us a dark mode (default), and a clear mode. And this clear mode is sure to be familiar to us.
One of the most important characteristics of a video editor is the number of supported formats.
In the case of MiniTool MovieMaker, we can find support for practically any video format (such as AVI, MKV, MP4 or MOV, among others) so that we can add it to the program to work with it.
It is also compatible with the main image formats (JPEG, PNG, etc.) and audio (like MP3) so that we can add whatever content we want to our project.
When it comes to exporting the projects we find one of the main limitations of this program. MiniTool has limited the resolution of exported projects to FullHD, i.e. 1920 × 1080. We will not be able to export our videos, for example, in 4K.
Regarding the supported formats when exporting the project, we find:
- MP3 (to export audio only)
In addition, we can also export our videos with the optimal characteristics to be played on mobile devices. This is possible thanks to a series of profiles that we can find in this same video export window.
All these formats use the h264_nvenc or libx264 codecs and they allow us to choose the bitrate and the quality that our video will have.
Differences with Windows Movie Maker
We should not confuse MiniTool MovieMaker with Windows Movie Maker, since, although similar, they are totally different programs.
The purpose of the two programs is the same: to provide users with an easy-to-use video editor that allows them to unleash their imaginations even without prior knowledge of editing.
While Windows Movie Maker has long since ceased to exist, as Microsoft abandoned its development, MiniTool MovieMaker it is software in development that is well supported.
Windows Movie Maker to this day continues to work without problems. Although it costs a bit to find it, if we download and install it in Windows 10 it is still a fully functional program. Although with some limitations, especially in terms of compatible formats.
MiniTool MovieMaker brings everything good about Microsoft video editor and improves all the weak points of it. The interface is similar (although not the same), and the tools, effects and transitions included in this new program are much better than those included in Windows Movie Maker. You can tell that the years have passed by Microsoft software and, having been abandoned, there is nothing to do with it.
Minimum requirements to edit videos
Editing video is a task that requires a fairly powerful computer. Many programs, if we have a mid-range computer, will not open directly or, as soon as we load a video, they will be blocked.
MiniTool has been very careful with the minimum requirements to be able to use this video editor. We don’t need anything fancy to be able to install this program and use it to create all kinds of videos:
- Compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
- 6th generation i5 processor (or higher) at 2 Ghz.
- 8 GB of RAM.
- 10 GB of hard drive space.
- Graphics equal to or better than Intel HD Graphics 5000, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 700 or AMD Radeon R5.
Of course, the better the hardware of our computer, the better we can use this video editing program and the faster the videos will be rendered. Likewise, the higher the resolution and quality of the videos that we upload to the program, the more information there will be in the RAM and more resources it will consume.
It is highly recommended to have a SSD instead of a mechanical hard disk, since it is very noticeable when working with this type of software.
Finally, we must bear in mind that the higher the quality of the video we export, the longer it will take to render.
Advantages and disadvantages of MiniTool MovieMaker
Without a doubt, one of the main strengths of this program is that it could perfectly be one of the most faithful alternatives to Windows Movie Maker. MiniTool has once again brought users a very simple video editor, with basic functions and an interface familiar to Windows users. And it has also done it for free, so we can use it without having to go through the box and without having to assume limitations or watermarks.
In addition to the typical functions for cutting and mounting videos, it also has a large number of roles, transitions, and start titles and credits that allow us to give a professional touch to our creations. And if we talk about professional tools to change color and apply visual effects, they undoubtedly prove to be very high quality software.
However, it also has some drawbacks. The first one is that the program is exclusively on English, we cannot change it, for example, to Spanish. We must also bear in mind that it is exclusive to Windows (not available for macOS or Linux).
It is also annoying to see that drag & drop does not work. We cannot add videos to the program by dragging them from a folder to its interface. We must use its own wizard to import.
Another drawback (although logical) that we should not ignore is that, although we can add images to the project in png or jpeg formats, after processing them we can only export them in GIF. We cannot save the photos to PNG or JPEG again.
How to download MovieMaker
MiniTool MovieMaker is completely free software. Any user can download it from its official website without having to pay anything for it and without having to enter any type of registration. We can also download this program from any reliable website to download programs.
We will download from your website a Downloader, or downloader. When you run it, it will download the latest version of the video editor and leave it installed on your PC. The installation is clean of adware and unwanted software.
Once the installation is finished, we will be ready to start editing videos easily from our computer thanks to MiniTool MovieMaker. One of the best alternatives to the missing and beloved Windows Movie Maker.
