How to disable Cortana in Windows 10 Anniversary Update

One of the novelties that came with Windows 10 was Cortana, Microsoft’s personal assistant that seeks to help users find what they are looking for from the launch bar itself, without having to open, for example, a browser or an additional application. Although Cortana is actually a very useful tool, it consumes resources and, in addition, it is not to everyone’s liking, so many users decided to disable it and use the search box as a search engine for programs and settings, but nothing more.

Windows 10 Anniversary Update It is a mandatory update for all users of this operating system, so, even if we do not want to, it is most likely that we will end up receiving it, having to adapt to the new operating system options. With this Windows 10 update, Microsoft has eliminated the possibility of deactivating Cortana from the search engine, so all users will have to have the assistant activated, even if they don’t want to. Luckily, it is still possible to disable it through a simple change in the Windows registry, as we will see below.

Disable Cortana in Windows 10 with a simple registry change

Since we do not have the option to deactivate the assistant in this update, if we want to deactivate it, if we are users of the Pro version we can do it from gpedit.msc although, however, we prefer to explain the Windows registry method that is simpler and it works the same in both the Home and Pro versions.

To do this, all we have to do is search (in Cortana) «regedit.exe»And open the registry editor. Once in it, we move to the route:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Policies Microsoft Windows Windows Search

By default this path does not exist, so we should probably create it by right-clicking on the path « Windows» and choosing «New> Password«.

Once the key «Windows Search«, Click on it with the right button and create a«New> DWORD value (32 bits) » and we name it «AllowCortana«. Once the new value has been created, we double click on it to open it and then change its value to “0”.

Now, the only thing we have to do is restart the computer and we will see how the Windows 10 assistant is no longer activated, but we only have a search engine.

In case we want to use Cortana again in the future, we simply have to change the value of this key to “1”, or simply delete it so that everything returns to normal.
